The spread of Sagina on Gough has been restricted mainly to the seacliffs near to the base. But there is a largish stack that sits just 20 m away from the most heavily infested cliffs. It’s called Archway Rock, because it used to be connected to the island. The first few teams on Gough used to land all their supplies at Archway, hauled up from boats on a winch. The metkassies used to lower the sea-temp thermometer through a hole in the archway. Then, one day in the 1970s, the team heard a loud rumbling, and when they got down to the cliffs, the archway had collapsed, and Archway Rock has become a misnomer for an offshore stack. |

Mid-winter greetings from the plus40south team!
We would like to wish all present over-wintering personnel and past team members the very best for this special time – 21 June, the winter solstice, marking the time when the days start to lengthen (unless you are at SANAE!). From here, it is downhill to the end of the long, long nights of the deep south and SUMMER IS IN SIGHT! Hope you have a very festive mid-winter celebration |
