Mid-winter Gough expedition
Written by Ross Wanless
Thursday, 31 May 2007
50% of the Plus40South team, namely me and Martin, are here on Gough for a month.  This is one of very few 'expeditions' to the island that DEA&T have sanctioned, and comes at the request of the Tristan administrator. We have come to tackle the invasive plant, Sagina procimbens. But besides that, we are attempting a bunch of other things. Such as a bait-acceptance trial on the mice, and keeping buntings and moorhens in captivity to see if they like baits or mice.

29 May:
We have gotten off to a flying start already. Arrived 9:30 am, and after cleaning the mouse-ridden lab and unpacking, we set off into the field. Brian (team leader) and Petrus (Medic, also the medic in Martin and my year on G49 team in 2003/04) came with us and helped us set up the mouse bait trial - marking out the area. Then we checked out the Sagina stuff and got ready for the onslaught which starts tomorrow.  While we were braaing some snoek (that the crew from the Edinburgh caught for us this morning) for dinner, there were a couple of moorhens running around. I need to do the bait presentation study on them, so I went and fetched the nets from the lab.  In no time at all, thanks to Jonty and Petrus, we had 2 Moorhens, now weighed and in cages in E-base. Going like a boeing!

Hey, I'll be on Gough Island for June.

Hey, I'll be on Gough Island for June.

Gough is a small island in the south atlantic ocean about 2600Km from cape town.   Its an uninhabited island, except for a small research base, 6 to 8 people.  Gough is a british island and is one of a few world heritage sites. Gough island is also the home of several nearly endangered species.

Its NOT a tropical island its a Sub-Antarctic Island, meaning its cold, windy  & wet thus COOL. Perfect for a camp out. dont forget the tea.

Why are we going there and what am I doing? Well its a difficult one to type out but I'll try and make it short.

They needed a bloke to hang off the cliffs to do some invasive plant eradication. Count Albatrosses and do things like that.

Extraordinary waves experienced on Gough Island
Written by Brian Bowie
Monday, 21 May 2007
On Thursday 17 May 2007, some incredible waves were seen on Gough Island. The sea swell was easily 10 m and at times higher. The sea spray from the waves crashing into the cliffs below the base was hitting the base. What makes this feat even more remarkable is that the base is 54 m above sea level and 200 m inland. The rough seas continued throughout the day, and often we would mistake sound of the sea spray on our corrigated iron roof of the base as rain. It is unusual for us to have a strong south easterly wind, the wind was helping to carry the spray further. The spray was seen to be blowing up all the ridges running up from the sea. The following day we found pieces of kelp around the base. The spray seen in the photo is at least 30 m high.
